THIS CLINIC STAYS OPEN.
Dear feminist activist,
Only one year ago, more than one million women and men marched in Washington, DC for reproductive rights.
Commemorate the March by helping a troubling situation for reproductive rights in Wichita, Kansas.
Dr. George Tiller, medical director of the Women’s Health Care Services clinic, is one of the few late-term abortion providers in the country. Desperate women with troubled pregnancies come to Dr. Tiller’s clinic from all over the country.
Dr. Tiller has courageously withstood repeated attacks by anti-abortion extremists, including arsons and an attempted assassination in 1994 by an Army of God adherent, in which he was shot five times. Now, for more than a year, the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue West has targeted Dr. Tiller’s clinics with protests – what the group calls the “Year of Rebuke.” Not only does the group hold protests outside of the clinic, but the group also protests outside of the homes of clinic staff and at local businesses that provide goods and services to Women’s Health Care Services.
As if that wasn’t enough, Dr. Tiller’s clinic is also facing legal challenges. Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an anti-abortion ideologue, has subpoenaed the unedited medical records of 90 women and girls who sought late-term abortions in 2003 at Dr. Tiller’s clinic and a local Planned Parenthood clinic. Kline claims he needs these records to prosecute cases of child rape, but Kline has subpoenaed not only records from girls under the age of 16 (the age of legal consent in Kansas) but also the records of women 16 and older.
Dr. Tiller’s clinic is fighting this invasion of medical privacy by a far-right state Attorney General. And you can help! Please, make an emergency contribution today. Half of your contribution will be contributed to Dr. Tiller’s legal defense fund.
And the other half of your emergency contribution will support our efforts to help keep targeted and embattled clinics nationwide safe and open. The Feminist Majority Foundation’s National Clinic Access Project, the only nationwide project focused on assisting independent clinics like Dr. Tiller’s, is working with local, state, and federal law enforcement in Wichita on behalf of Dr. Tiller.
And, if you give us $45 or more, we will send you an original March for Women’s Lives button. Celebrate the magnificent March for Women’s Lives while you help the Feminist Majority Foundation keep embattled clinics open.
Together, we are making a difference.
For Women’s Lives,
Eleanor Smeal President Feminist Majority Foundation
