D4D TAKE BACK NEW YORK COLLECTION LAUNCH PARTY. PLEASE COME VOLUNTEER.
YO. Get ready. And can anyone volunteer?
Dear D4D Volunteers,
It's been a while since we all hung out, partied and kicked those post '04 Bush blues. Now D4D is back doing what we do best, mobilizing the creative community around progressive politics. The New York Times said so recently in the Sunday style section! In true D4D fashion we have bunch of really exciting events coming up and we need volunteers! The first is the launch party for our "Take Back New York" Campaign this coming Monday and we need your help!
In this email you'll find:
1) What we're up to-current campaigns!
2) Volunteer for TBNY Collection Launch Party Monday!
3) "No Sleep Til Albany" Silent Auction at GBE at Passerby
4) D4D MFA Show
5) The New York Times talks up D4D!
1) WHAT WE'RE UP TO:
Take Back New York!
Although New York is usually considered a "liberal" state, Republicans control City Hall, the Governor's Mansion and our state Senate. Last year, Governor George Pataki raised over 10 million dollars for George W. Bush's reelection campaign. So the question is: How can we take back America when we don't even control New York? We at D4D believe that, just as the current Right Wing Revolution began at the local level in the Texas of the 1970's, so America's next progressive resurgence will begin right here in New York. Last year, D4D helped elect three Democratic state senators and a District Attorney in Albany. This year, we helped introduce important reform legislation to stop Republicans from using the prison population to gerrymander legislative districts. And next year, we'll help elect a Democratic governor and continue the fight to reclaim the New York State Senate for the first time in forty years.
2) "TAKE BACK NEW YORK" COLLECTION LAUNCH PARTY!
This coming Monday at D4D celebrates the launch of its new collection. We'll need your help from 7:15-11:15. We need bartenders, t-shirt sellers and help on clean up. If enough people are able to help we will do 2 helping shifts. 7:15-9:15 and 9:00-11:15.
Please email volunteer@downtownfordemocracy.org if you can help.

3) NO SLEEP TIL ALBANY
We are hosting a silent auction at Gavin Brown's Enterprise at Passerby on December 6 and will need help with art handling from Dec 4-7. We are especially seeking experienced art handlers and packers.
4) MFA STUDENT SHOW!
Downtown for Democracy (D4D) is looking for art world savvy volunteers to represent the organization at MFA programs in the tri-state area from late October, 2005 through January, 2006. D4D is a political action committee mobilizing the creative community and transforming its cultural influence into political power: money, visibility, and votes. Previous participants in D4D arts events include: John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Cecily Brown, Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Dana Schutz, Richard Serra, Kara Walker, and many more.
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in the intersection of the art world and politics. D4D is creating a high profile event for MFA and Masters in Studio Arts students to take place at a major gallery space in NYC in February 2006 and needs volunteers to visit MFA programs and discuss the event with students, administrators, and faculty. Jurors for this event include Jerry Salz, Neville Wakefield, Matthew Higgs and Laura Hoptman. Volunteers must have some knowledge of the art world and be able to travel within NY, CT, and NJ. Please email a short letter describing what would make you a good candidate to represent D4D to brooke@downtownfordemocracy.org.
