EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION EXPERIMENT

So as a little experiment today to see about the new act that was passed making EC available over the counter (a pharmacist can prescribe it) I went to the Duane Reade near my office that's connected to the Port Authority and asked for it. I brought info about the act that was passed wednesday. She totally denied me the EC. I'm not sure if that was fully illegal. I'll have to find out more. In the meantime. Here's an important resource for those of my friends without health insurance (isn't that like all of you?) If you need emergency contraception, you can call this number and you can also use this search page to find providers of EC in your area:

The Reproductive Health Program at the University of Rochester will do a personal medical assessment over the phone for women in need of EC who cannot reach a clinic. They will call a prescription in to the pharmacy of your choice. There is no charge for this service. Please call the pharmacy in advance and confirm that (1) it stocks Plan B and (2) it is open during the hours you want to pick up the prescription. When you call, please be ready with the name, address and phone number of the pharmacy. Call at 585-341-6568 during regular working hours and 585-453-2444 evenings until 9 PM and weekends in the morning. *they do not prescribe to non-patients on weekends.

http://www.getthepill.com/ is a medical internet site that provides prescriptions for emergency contraceptive pills. After taking a medical history to determine eligibility, they will phone in a prescription to your local pharmacy. The cost of an online assessment is $24.95 and does not include the price of the pills. (There is no fee if you are denied a prescription.) This website is available 24 hours; prescriptions are not submitted to pharmacies between 10 pm and 8 am EST. You must be a US resident and between the ages of 18 and 40 to use this service.

Click here to get info about EC and use the zipcode finder.

Calling the people in Rochester is really easy, just have the name and phone number of your pharmacy ready and they'll call it in for you.
