I'M SORRY I DIDN'T ANSWER MY PHONE LAST NIGHT!
So to the ten people who called last night I'm sorry I didn't answer. I was at these presentations/events that sort of made it impossible. and i couldn't hear a damn thing. anyway, last night I went to the reception for Jennifer Miller's book "Inheriting the Holy Land" and heard her read from it. It was really cool. Then I zipped down to City Bakery for Eve Ensler's send-off party as she takes The Good Body on tour. It was lovely. And I got to see some of my most favorite people. Now, it is FREEZING in my apt. and I need to leave for work. Goodbye best summer ever.

KELLY'S BOOK PARTY!!!
HEY! Just a reminder to attend Kelly's book party Thursday!
From Kelly on Monday:
Hello and happy Monday.
Just a little reminder/update...
Word from the very fine people at the New Museum is that we can extend
the festivities an hour further (until 9 o'clock).
So it's 6 - 9 now. Whoa-pa!
Be sure to drop your card (or name on a napkin) in the hat for a chance
to win one of 3 posters that need good homes.
They will be drawing names at around 8:30, I guess.
Also, there's a bunch of really good shows up in Chelsea now. If you
haven't been for a while, and have some time, I highly recommend taking
a look on 22nd and 24th streets in particular. Inspiration awaits.
Hope you're all grand.
xx

ANTLERS ATE IT HARD ON THE POTHOLE ON 9TH ST.
so. this morning i was riding my bike down the bike lane on 9th st approaching 5th ave. i caught a glare and couldn't see the pothole in the bike lane. so upon smashing into it i went right over the handlebars, banged my helmet-clad forehead on the pavement, and slid on my chest and elbows. the bike had slightly worse luck, as the stem got knocked right out of the headset's grip and was sliding all around loose in there. both my brake levers bent under, my chain fell off and my front wheel got knocked out of true.
so!
i reported it to the department of public transportation, which you can do by calling 311, and they say it will be fixed in 60-90 days. It's work order #DM2005270016, reported at 4:52pm 9/27/05.
and! you can report it to transalt as well. transalt.org

AH THE WEEKEND.
(i'm all about these pics, so i'm gonna post a few of 'em. here's krozier.)
So. This was a lovely weekend. Firday night I got whisked away by the lovely Ariston to the New York Film Festival opening night premiere of Good Night, and Good Luck. It's a George Clooney film about the McCarthy era and the TV journalist Edward R. Murro. The party afterward at Tavern on the Green was a gorgeous and fancy affair. George Clooney was there, along with Sofia Cooppola, Todd Solondz and THE David Byrne, who was sitting 2 rows ahead of me at the premiere! There was a delicious, giant buffet and bars galore and a band. Lovely. Then Saturday was The Wilderness opening at Supreme Trading. The work there was really awesome, they had 5 projections going at once in the backroom and it was beautiful. I got plastered on Red Stripe (and jello shots. ewww.) and we stumbled over to KCDC for more art & free beer. Then we made it to union pool to meet up with the rest of wburg. I drank waaaaaaaaay too much. But anyway, Sunday was a nice bbq at Rattlesnake's house, and then we interviewed prospective roomies for my new apt.
So that was nice.
Here are some other nice happenings this week to come to.
Tonight! Free Rainer Maria show at Arlene's Grocery. Isn't that nice?

HELP BUILD PRE-FAB HOUSES FOR KATRINA VICTIMS.
reprinted from lisa:
OK, so it's a Today Show initiative, but it sounds kind of cool. Basically you go to Rockefeller Plaza for any two-hour period next week, you build pre-fab houses with three of your friends, and your work gets shipped to the Gulf Coast area. (Official invitation below.)
Volunteers Needed! Help Rebuild the Gulf Coast
Hurricane Katrina destroyed nearly half a million homes. In response to this unprecedented devastation, NBC News' Today show is pleased to announce an effort to help the Gulf Coast rebuild, one nail at a time. In partnership with Habitat for Humanity and Warner Music Group, NBC News will transform Rockefeller Plaza into "Humanity Plaza" for five days next week as homes are built around the clock for families displaced by the hurricane.
Work will begin bright and early on Monday, September 26. By the end of the week, dozens of prefabricated homes will have been assembled and shipped to the Gulf Coast region.
But this can only happen with your help. Habitat for Humanity needs more than 1,000 volunteers to donate a two-hour shift of their time next week, helping to assemble these homes. Tools and prior experience are not needed, just a willing heart.
Construction will take place around the clock.
Work will be conducted in teams of four. The web registration tool allows you to sign up yourself and three friends, colleagues, or family members. Or you can come alone and be assigned to a crew.
Sign up for your shift here.
Help make a difference ... and enjoy doing something different. Build a home for a family in need. Celebrities from NBC Universal and Warner Music will be joining this effort as well, so there's no telling who your crewmates might be.

NY DAILY NEWS ON THE BUMPS!
Bumpy road to a fix
City finally dumps bridge humps
BY ELIZABETH HAYS
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
A stretch of bone-rattling bumps along the Williamsburg Bridge bike and pedestrian path is finally getting smoothed out.
Following several reports by the Daily News, city workers have begun replacing all 26 of the path's unpopular expansion joints covers - which critics charge have caused scores of bike crashes and violate federal accessibility laws.
"It's a huge improvement," said cyclist Doug Marvin, a musician from Greenpoint who regularly rides over the bridge.
"I had a blowout on the bridge from hitting the bumps," he added. "I'm glad they're finally doing something about it."
The changes come after the city was slapped with $12 million in lawsuits from six cyclists who were hurt riding over the plates on the Manhattan side, said attorney Adam White who is representing the bikers.
"They're awful," said A'yen Tran, who commutes across the bridge on her bike every day. "They bend your rims, and they're scary because you can lose control of your bike every time you go over them."
The city's Transportation Department began replacing the raised metal covers with flatter plates last week, a project it hopes to finish by December.
It will cost about $2,000,000 to replace the original covers - which have a straight edge that rises nearly 2 inches from the path, officials said.
"It's too bad that so many cyclists crashed and were severely injured, but to the city's credit, they recognized this was a problem and are making it safer," said Noah Budnick of Transportation Alternatives, who led the campaign to remove the bumps.
"From what I've seen on paper, it looks like it will be a very good improvement."
Disabled advocates had argued the bumps were too steep for wheelchairs and violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.
After insisting last spring the covers did not violate federal law, DOT officials acknowledged this week the steep metal plates were "not fully" in compliance.
"The enhanced bumps will make the bridge fully ADA compliant," said DOT spokeswoman Kay Sarlin.
Not everyone was happy the bumps will be removed.
Isaac Abraham, a leader in the Williamsburg Satmar community, argued the bumps help to slow cyclists.
Just yesterday, Abraham said his wife, Sara, was stuck by a cyclist during her daily morning walk across the bridge.
"Not only should the bumps be there, the bumps should be higher," said Abraham, whose wife was taken to NYU Medical Center for treatment.
DOT officials said they are looking to install signs warning cyclists to slow down.
