someone buy me this piece of crap please.
GOTH INFIGHTING ON NYHAPPENINGS!
goth foodfight! he he. so a goth who only identifies himself as "stockyard channing" wrote in complete disgust about sunday's tres fun looking goth beauty pageant. i thought the hipster pseudo goth revival was supposed to be ironic! weren't we all poking fun at gothdom like 5 minutes ago?
"I know that this is the trendiest egroup in NYC, but I'm a bit disappointed that none of you (c'mon, Daniel, you've got brains!) turkeys did any homework. If you had, you'd know that there has beena Gothic Beauty Pageant in NYC for many years now. It's been held by actual goths at ALCHEMY, not the trendies with pathetic connections to Details magazine and other, poseur shittt. Now that you trendies (by the way, that article on "Visions of the Apocaplypse" just showshow they're shamelessly ripping off the goth scene) know that there is another pageant and that its been run by a real scene, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? Are you going to try to reach out to the already existing pageant and invite its organizers, judges, etc. on-board? Or are you just going to rip them the fuck off?I'm nominating Ashley Simpson as your "gothic" beauty queen! Makes me wanna move back to Portland! See yous in the pit!- Stocki"

well anyway, it looks fun and you can find deets here
NY Press runs 50 Most Loathsome NYers list. he he he.
50 most loathsome new yorkers. ha!
The list includes both Bloomberg (#1) and Giff Miller, the Olsen brats, Lohan, Sarah Lewitinn of TENAFLY NEW JERSEY where I went to middle school, Carlos D (wrong), Eliot Spitzer (wrong again), Larry Tee, Nick Denton (I heart gawker) and my fave: Bruce Smolka--devil incarnate.
17. Bruce Smolka NYPD Assistant Chief
February 1999: Officers in Smolka's NYPD's Street Crime Unit pump 41 bullets into Amadou Diallo. February 2003: Smolka illegally orders horseback-mounted police to charge a group of peaceful antiwar demonstrators. April 2003: Smolka confronts a group of about 100 demonstrators in front of the Carlyle Group's headquarters with 300 officers outfitted in full riot gear. August 2004: Responsible for securing midtown during the RNC, the smoldering chief could be found standing on "his" perimeter, head clean-shaven, blue eyes piercing, chin jutting, arms folded across his chest like an urban Patton. He personally oversaw the illegal arrest and detention of hundreds during the convention. Then, humiliated by August's 5000-strong Critical Mass ride, he deployed the NYPD's full force in an effort to control the monthly gathering. Until December, that is, when federal judge William Pauley ruled against Smolka's request for an injunction to stop the ride. The only upside of being arrested by this thug is that you have an excellent chance of getting off when your case finally comes before a judge.

COVER GIRLS
Cover story!
Gretchen Dyer has a congenital heart condition. When she became pregnant with twins, her doctor warned that bringing the pregnancy to term might kill both her and the babies. She had an abortion. Sebastiana Correa, a native of Brazil and daughter of an anti-abortion activist, became pregnant while studying in the United States as a graduate student. She had an abortion. Then there's 93-year-old Henrietta Levner. In the 1920s and 1930s, she had several illegal abortions..... more here
Why are people insane (who don't actually have mental health problems)?
Newsday headline:
Man Tries to Steal Gun to 'Rescue Schiavo'
...Randy McKenzie, the owner of Randall's Firearms, said Mitchell pulled out the box cutter and broke the glass on a couple of display cases. "He told me if I wasn't on Terri's side then I wasn't on God's side, either," McKenzie told The Associated Press. McKenzie said he then pointed his own gun at Mitchell and ordered him to lie on the ground. But Mitchell fled out the store's back door before police arrived, he said....Thursday, March 24, 2005

ANATHEMA MAGAZINE IS THE BEST MAGAZINE EVER.
Okay, so I was reading the new magazine Anathema which I got at the absurdly fun and nice Anathema magazine party the other night at Tonic (save tonic!). It's fucking brilliant, I mean really brilliant. And despite the fact that most of the contributors are my friends, the thing I liked best was by a fellow named Nicholas Herman, whom I have never met. His article was a Foucaultian argument about the role of the photography of torture on public memory (Abu Ghraib) and a comparison of the Oubliette (medieval dungeon trapdoor in the floor of a court) with the Camera Obscura (pinhole camera). He then compares and inverts these comparisons. Go get the magazine now.

"Speak Out: I Had an Abortion" fundraiser/screening Thursday!
(I'm in this film, and on page 171 of Glamour wearing the t-shirt for the film, along with filmmaker Gillian Aldrich!)
"Speak Out: I Had an Abortion" documents 10 women's abortion stories, from a 20-year-old single mom in Detroit to an 85-year-old Harlem resident. These stories are personal testimonies, not didactically political in nature. It is the power of a story rather than political dogma that drives the message of the film.
WHEN: Thursday, March 24th
7pm (sharp) screening
8 PM cocktails and reception
Suggested donation. $20. We will accept more if you can afford to, less if you can’t.
